About Us
About a decade ago, while exploring programs to support through my local Rotary club, I had an idea. Our club regularly provided scholarships to deserving students entering their first year of college—a noble cause. However, I felt it excluded those further along in life who also aspired to advance their education. I envisioned a fund for older, non-traditional students—mothers, fathers, and individuals juggling multiple jobs—seeking to improve their lives and careers. Balancing work and education is challenging, especially with the added responsibilities of adulthood, such as parenthood or caring for elderly parents.
In 2024, life presented me with numerous challenges, prompting a search for answers amidst chaos and negativity. During this difficult time, I realized that instead of spending money in a futile pursuit of truth and honesty, I could use those funds to help others advance themselves—creating something positive from a negative situation. The name of the scholarship is both an inside reference and a nod to the Winter Solstice, symbolizing the gradual increase in daylight and reflecting my optimistic outlook on life. Thus, the “It Only Gets Lighter From Here Scholarship Fund” was born in the Summer of 2024, starting with two scholarships: a $2,500 award and a $5,000 award.
These scholarships are not limited to academic expenses. Attending school at a later age often requires reducing work hours, yet bills still need to be paid. These scholarships are designed to support educational pursuits and supplement income while attending school full-time. The requirements are challenging due to the high number of worthy applicants, necessitating strict criteria. Each applicant is individually reviewed by a panel of five auditors and narrowed down to a select group of finalists. Ultimately, one recipient for each scholarship is chosen and notified via email.
OUR MISSION: 'It Only Gets Lighter From Here Scholarship Fund' supports residents of Maine and New Hampshire aged 30 or older pursuing their first degree, aiming to eliminate financial barriers and empower non-traditional students with limited incomes. Our goal is to inspire academic success, personal growth, and career advancement by providing support for full-time education and living expenses during schooling.
